I want to build this bed, from a 1995 WW magazine article I saved. I have a stash of air dried 8/4 hard maple (12% moisture) picked up for $300 to use. Posts are 3 pieces, 2 @ 36" + finial. I got a start on drawing out the post parts full size from the info in the magazine article. Posts are 3"x3" , but I'm thinking of making them approx 3&1/2" square after glueing up 2 pieces of the 8/4 stock. The posts are a bit more complicated with reeding and fluting. I'm hoping the wood will be usable this fall. The maple has some worm holes, spalting, but the price was right for hobby use.

Got to sit in with my buddies tonight playing happy hour at a local bar and grill. I played all three sets with them, only sitting out on three or four songs. I've only actually rehearsed about six or seven songs with them, but was able to fake and follow on the rest. This is my second time of playing full sets with them...I got to do the same thing last Sunday at a graduation party for a friend's daughter. And it looks like I get to do it again next Sunday at another restaurant/bar nearby. The more I get to play with them, the more I start to resemble a real guitar player. :D

I'm working on summer vacation plans and it looks like I'm going to have about 2 days to spend around Los Angeles, CA. We don't expect to do much except drive up and down the coast a few hours and visit a couple/few beaches. We fly back home out of LAX on a Saturday morning. I need to find a decent affordable hotel for the two nights we are there. I think I want to stay pretty close to the airport to avoid any morning traffic the morning we fly out. For anyone who has stayed at hotels near LAX....do you have any recommendations. I'm getting dizzy trying to read all the different reviews online....besides...I trust you all.

Thanks,

I've been tasked with making the cross for my grandsons grave. It will probably be about 4' tall.

I've bought black locust. I wanted to make the cross 1 1/2"- 2" thick but the only locust that I could find fairly locally is 4/4. I'm thinking about planing 2 pcs to 3/4" or so then gluing them together.
I bought Gorilla glue and I have Titebond 3 just not sure which one would be best. Keeping in mind that a foot or so of the cross will be buried in the earth.
The pieces will be about 3" wide and face glued. Should I use epoxy or will Gorilla or TB111 work ???????

I'm thinking about finding some place and having his name and date laser engraved on it. Also was thinking about leaving it unfinished because locust almost looks like teak when its aged.
Would you recommend a finish on it or leave it natural?? Locust will last embedded in the ground for 30 years or more.

Sorry, not a fun subject to bring up. I just want to make sure I don't screw it up.

Thanks for your insight.

So I'm working on this problem and really sanded the project well using all the proper grits through to 400. This left very fine dust all over project. I recently bought a new tack cloth (which I have never used before) and took it out of the package waded it up as stated on package and lightly wiped it over the wood. It is VERY tacky and it has left some residue on the wood. What can I use to clean this off before applying my Danish oil finish.
Not a happy camper right now. :pullhair:

It's been a while since I've drifted in here. Time to get back to woodworking, I guess. This is an ash & cherry glider cradle I recently made for an upcoming grandson. I started by ordering a set of cradle plans off the web. I did that to get an idea of the basic structure & dimensions for the project. I then designed the finished item to utilize some ash from a downed tree on our property & cherry for a contrast in tone.
cradle 800x600.JPG
I wanted it to have a distinctive look to it with the two types of wood, but I designed it with a simple, straight forward style that would not clash with any furniture style my son might later add to the room. The ends are frame & panel construction.
cradle end 800x600.JPG
& the sides utilize loose tenons.
cradle side 800x600.JPG
A friend offered his Festool domino for the ladder side joinery & I do like loose tenon joining, but really can't justify the cost of that tool. I've since made a jig for one of my Shopsmiths that works almost as fast using an upcut router bit. The glider hardware is available from several web sources. I used Original Waterlox as the finish & it is now my new favorite for ease of use and look.
(Looks like I have some duplication in the photos, I'll have to figure out how to avoid that in the future...still getting the hang of posting stuff)
