After Vaughn's thread, I thought I would give the reverse on my lathe a shot. Have never had much occasion to use it. But, I tried it out for some sanding on a spindle project I'm working on. Worked fine. But, afterwards, I noticed a near disaster with my live center. Just about disassembled itself. I'll tighten it up and maybe put a tiny drop of Loctite on the threads so this doesn't happen again.

Looks like the center's point got pretty hot at one time or another, which means the wood was turning, and the center wasn't. Got a bad bearing there, maybe?

After you loctite the threads and retighten it, it might be a good idea to put some heavy duty duct or packing tape around it, with a hole cut out for the spinning cone in the center; this way, if the loctite fails (I've seen it happen), the center won't be able to pop out while spinning.
