First big bowl

I've had this chunk of spalted maple laying in the shop doorway for about 5 months... it's part of a big maple that came down about 4 years ago.. about year before we moved in... I have about 1/2 to a ton of this stuff laying behind the shop under a tarp hopefully not rotting before I get to it.

The bowl is about 11 inches outside diameter, about 6 inches deep. It's not finished, I want to take a little more off the inside walls and off the bottom. I knocked it loose in the chuck so I brought it in to show the wife... she's always after me to make bigger bowls... hopefully, I can get it back to near smooth turning with as little wobble as possible, so I can finish it..

Apologize for the pictures.. since it isn't finished, I didn't get out the light box.. just some quick pics with the wife's little digital.

Man, that's some nice-looking maple, Chuck.

BTW, to those of you wondering what goblets Bernie is referring to, he was talking about these.

Finally got this monster finished... discovered after I got the inside and outer part done that I didn't have any thing big enough to hold the bowl while I took the tenon off the bottom.... finally had to go to Lowe's and buy a 2x2 sheet of 3/4 plywood, cut it round and mount on my 6" face plate... then duct taped the bowl to the plywood face plate to take the bottom off. Finished with sanding sealler and about 8 or 10 coats of wipe on poly. I still have some rough places on the inside where the wood was getting soft and pithy... would have worked better if I had gotten some kind of wood hardener and painted the inside, then scraped again to smooth. Still at my show last weekend, nearly everyone who came into the booth either touched and picked the bowl up to look at it.

Members asked to see it finished so here are a few pictures..
