Questions about a barracuda 2 chuck

Hello, I am a new member.
I have bought my first chuck it is a Barracuda 2.
I am getting used to using it and a chuck. I bought it because i turn bowls mainly and i wanted to get away from the unsighlty screw holes left from the face plate.
My first questions is: I want to work on the foot of the bowl I just turned, but the jaws that came with the chuck will not open far enough to hold the rim of the bowl....so what do i use to have the chuck grip the edge of a 7-8 inch bowl? ......Is there
something else that I need to purchase for this chuck?

Also, where can I get additional screws like those that mount the four "jaws"?
    thanks,
    I await your replies.

You can get a cole jaw/flat jaw set or make a jamb chuck.

    Good luck

    Hi Scott
You can buy additional screws from Penn State, they charged me $2.00 for 12 screws.
As far as your Bole problem you can make a Jam Chuck by turning a chunk of wood to kinda fit your bowls inside use a pad between the two and your tail stock will hold it there by applying pressure. You other option is to buy the large jaws for your chuck and change to them after turning the bowls inside. I can't remember the name of the large jaws, but someone will. Hope this helps.

Welcome aboard, Scott. Glad to see you post. I think I misunderstood your question in our earlier e-mail discussions. To hold the bowl by the rim (in order to remove the tenon from the bottom of the bowl), you could use Cole jaws like these:

You can also use a home-made donut chuck or Longworth chuck.

I use a donut chuck a fair amount, even though I also have a vacuum chuck.

Instead of steering you to hardware, I recommend joining a local club first if possible:
AAW Local Chapter Listing - The American Association of Woodturners
or "Turned bowl made easy" DVD by Bill Grumbine.
There are various methods and each has its limitations. Learning the proper techniques would open up the possibilities.

I made a set of Cole jaws for my chuck and haven't taken them off. I use a face plate with a good length of scrap wood on it. I then CA my blank to this. After turning, I part off the bowl, mount it in the Cole jaws, and finish the foot. Then square up the scrap wood and your ready to go again.

And I highly recommend the Bill Grumbine DVD above any I have seen. Awesome!

Make yourself a good donut chuck. They are easy to make and get you a cheap faceplate to mount to the donut chuck and you are set.
