Wanting a new lathe.

I have the Jet 1642 with 2hp motor.......i really like it, 16" swing and cast iron stand came with it, great support if you need it, packaged very well, and came complete except the chuck. I bought the super nova and really enjoy it to but it is not compact...........just a quick note but you wont go wrong with the jet...........Dan
 
If you are looking primarily at turning bowls you have loads of options. The DVR that you mentioned is a great machine. I have the 1624 which is the manual form of the same lathe. I love it. Another manual lathe that you might want to look at is the new Vega 2416B. It has 24" swing, 16" between centers, 8 speeds, and the "B" means that it is a bench top lathe. One reason for this is to hold the cost down. Unless it's gone up recently we're talking about $1400. I was given high praise for this machine by Bill Grumbine himself. Just a thought though. You'll be happy with any of the machines mentioned.
