I've been working on refinishing a coffe table for a friend recently and I have a problem with the stain. There is one spot or streak really that doesn't seem to be taking stain at all. The top is maple and the stain is a dark brown gel stain. I stripped and sanded the previous finish off the top to bare wood, but I can't figure out why this one spot is not taking the stain while everything else is....could there still be a little previous finish on this spot?
My question is can I sand down to bare wood in this spot again and restain and expect it to not look like a fix? Could I "blend" it in and if so any tips. Or do any of you have any better ideas? I've tried to apply stain to just this area, but it just isn't working.
I will be using a 50/50 mix of poly and mineral spirits for a hand rubbed finish.
I need to deliver this table by the weekend too, so any quick help will be most appreciated. Thanks.
