    Captive Hollowing rigs

For those that have made there own Steel snake or similar rigs, what type of cutter bars works best? Is the straight bar much more versitile than the Swan neck type. Your comments and experiences would help when I fabricate my 5/8" shaft bars. Currently I'm using 1/2" bars, straight and swan neck with a adjustable bit holders.

John I would copy what you already have in 1/2" when you fabricate your 5/8 stock if possible. Gives you more options when your turning.

    Hollowing bars

Jeff, the only draw back is bending the 5/8" bar. I had a hard time on the 1/2". Any suggestions as to bending it? Maybe do a 45 deg. only?

All you need is a vise, mapp gas (or propane, just takes longer) and a pipe to slide the bar into to use as a cheater to bend it. Or I've also seen it done by sticking the bar into a grill loaded with charcoal until its red hot and then bend it...again just takes longer.

Vaughn typed up a great tutorial on his bars as well >>Click Here<<
