OK.... So in my last post I got my Sawstop Cabinet finished...

I am starting on a mitred box

Here is my inspiration.... A very nice piece of walnut ( I think ). I am going to use this for the top and some walnut for the sides....

I think is some very cool figure....

That is some nice wood Bartee :thumb: Definitely some nice figure. Should make a nice box for sure. Looking forward to see the finished piece. OH and nice to see ya posting:wave:

Ready to see the rest, but I too think the "figured" piece is Cherry or some other fruit wood whilst the color is off the grain could be Walnut on the other piece (maybe, but more of a Luan grain unless the pix is a closeup)

At any rate. Finish it and lets take a look. Waiting for more... thanks for the posting...

well bartee,, i am late to the show but i agree on the purty wood being curly cherry and some nice stuff to boot,, that will make a fine box fer sure,, one hint thought that wavy grain will be prone to tear out if you need to do some planning on it later. so beware ,,sanding is the safest method..:D:thumb:

Hi Bartee, good to see you back. So you're going to keep us on our toes only showing us a small portion of that box? Well if the rest matches what you showed it is going to be a really beatiful box indeed!:thumb::thumb:

Hi Bartee, I am for the Cherry as well. I have some of the chocolate stuff here and it dont look that color.:D

Hey welcome back, how have you managed not to be in your shop?

OK I got some good shop time last night and today.

I really do enjoy my shop !!!!

I worked on the box,

Got all the parts milled out last night.

Today I got it to a glue up state. The plan was in Dec 2008 Fine WW.

I am really working on technique and learning the craft.

Pictures below. The Lee Valley should plane is really nice. I am also working on my sharpening techniques. The plane was very sharp and was a joy to use. I used it to fine tune the top and bottom joints.

The joints are very ingenious. ONE setup on the table saw and all of the joints worked!!!

My 1st real try at a nice box

DANG,where have I been,Don't know, sorry I'm late on this.But that is a beautifull piece.You done did good :thumb::thumb::thumb:

Beautiful work! Real nice design.
I've never worked with cherry before. The wife has been asking for a cherry secretary for a few years so maybe I'll give it a try.
Nice band clamps too !!

I built the jig to cut the corner notches.

This is a really simple design but it worked very well.

I had to glue a shim on the edge and then plane it down.

I sanded the runner with 100/150/220 then used paste wax.

It moves really nice in the mitre slot.

The story stick trick came out of the magazine article. It worked really well.

This result was very good.

Now I have to decide what I am going to use for the corner pieces.

Enjoy.

Got a couple of hours today.

I routed the slot of the handle and made it.

Also routed the hinge mortises. Good but I will learn to do better.

Here is what it looks likes today..... (Hinges are not attached yet, so I cannot open it)
