    Thursday Paddle

Since I couldn't paddle today, I built a paddle. Well I started yesterday so actually I finished a paddle today.

I have been saving this nasty piece of wood for a while now. I think it is old grown Western Red Cedar but I am not sure. It also looks a lot like mahogany but I don't think so.

Doesn't look like much does it? It was one of two diving boards on a boat house I salvaged.

Under all the dirt and weathering is a beautiful grain and along side is some samples I was considering.

I cut it up and then glued it up and let it dry overnight.

Saw it to rough shape and start working it hand planes, spoke shave and rasps.

Here I was about to start working the shoulders to fit my hand.

Here it is after a lot of work with the hands tools and a lot of sanding and a coat of oil

All this is left is to take it to the water and see how it performs. Make any changes and then varnish it.

God grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do,
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

And here I thought you had been a bad boy and got paddled!
Nice work and great pictures. That was very interesting to read. Anyone with a canoe should love that tutorial!!

God and family, the rest is icing on the cake. I'm so far behind, I think I'm in first place!

Good for you. I would have tossed the old piece of wood and looked for something else. The wood is saying mahogany to me.
    Fine results.

    Very Cool !

Great work Jeff. Sure can't judge a board by it's appearance

Did you get to test drive it yet ?
