This is probably pretty basic for most of you but.....

I have the Whiteside 6 bit general router bit set and I'm using the chamfer bit in my table mounted 7518. Is it okay to use the bit without the bearing on top?

Thanks very much.

I would have to agree with Stuart, on using the bit with a fence.

You could take the bearing off, but I wouldn't do that without having it half way in the fence on your router table.

Without the bearing or fence, the bit may want to bury itself in the stock. Aside from destroying the piece that you are working on, it might be dangerous too. Depending on the bit, the bearing may sit on a small post. If the bit pulls into the stock, this small post doesn't have anything to cut it clearnace. This might result in a broken (and flying bit! ) and/or a broken collet.
