I just completed a tutorial on how to make a veneer sand shaded fan. It's available here. It's about a 2MB pdf.

A sand shaded fan is shown in the attached picture.

You keep posting write-ups like this one and the compass rose one, and I'll have no choice but to get some veneering tools. You make it look like something even a rookie hack like me can do.
