Frank, here in Japan, on Yahoo Auction, we have the option of that system when you, as the seller, set up the auction, you can choose to have the auto extension, or not. I don't know why in the world you would, as a seller, choose NOT to have that option.... 
I've had auctions, where I was bidding on something that went a full two hours past the stated deadline, some goof (not ME) would keep upping the bid by 100 yen (about a buck) as the last 30 seconds or so were ticking off the clock, at that point, my auto bid would kick in (I had put my max bid in and let ride) and the clock would be reset to 10 minutes to go, then nine minutes and 45 second later, again, a 100 yen bid over my top bid, again reset, adding 10 minutes to the clock. I do not know if the goof was unaware that you could set a max bid and walk away or if they were trying to wear me down thinking I was bidding just after them or what
