To expand on my answer, in the old days of sailing ships there were 2 or 3 guys on watch at any time, the helsman, the rover and the lookout. Sometimes the rover was also the lookout. they stood 4 hour watches. The only time the whole crew was needed was when setting sail, making a major course adjustment and boarding another vessel. The rover would ring the bell every half hour of the watch. once on the half hour, twice on the hour, increasing 1 bell each time. So now you know more then you ever cared to know about seamanship..
Now ya got me started on sea stories. Ya know the differaance between sea storied and fairy tails.
Farytails start out "once pon a time"
Sea stories start out "this is no (cant say it)"
Fairy tails end "they all lived happily every after"
Sea stories end "Bet me (can't say it again)."
