(Re)Finish for dining room table

A friend contacted me last night and wants me to refinish the top of his dining room table. It isn't an expensive table, but he likes it. The finish doesn't like heat very much, as it has issues when he puts hot items on it (even with a hot pad between the item and the table).

How do I determine what the finish is? How do I clean it so it will take a new finish? What choices do I have for finish? I can spray the finish, as I have an HVLP system. I like WB lacquer, but am willing to give that up if something else would be better.

Your advice on this is MOST appreciated. He is a good friend and I would love to help him out, but I don't want to make a bad situation worse.

Thank you very much,
Warren

Sounds like a shellac finish. Put ML Camble Lacquer Mag-na-mag over it. You will not have any problems.

Except a hot medal trivet. Them thing will kill just about any finish.
