Stupid, stupid, stupid

Just a comment on how I did mine. I made a jig out of MDF. I laid the plate on the MDF and drew a line around it.

For the corners, I use a Forstner bit that had the same radius as the corners of the router plate. Then I used a jig saw and cut between each hole along the line drawn earlier. I stayed on the inside of the line. Then, I used a rasp to bring the hole to just the right size to fit the plate - I could put the plate into the jig to check the fit and shape.

To cut the hole, I clamped the jig to the table and used a bottom cleaning bit (which has a bearing at the top - I have an Amana bit but I don't remember the number right now). I set the depth below the jig to the thickness of the plate and routed it out. If you need to cut the center out to allow the router to fit through, you can do that rough with a starter hole and a jig saw.

Result: exact fit
