Spiral cut

Most of my projects lately have involved some form of automata...things that go up and down, round and round, in and out, all of the above, etc. They usually are powered by a hand crank. Unless I do something otherwise, one turn of the crank and the show is over. I can make gears to allow gear reduction but they take a lot of space and add a lot of fricton to the mechanism.
I saw a project somewhere where the builder used a wood spiral meshed with a wood gear to achieve gear reduction. I really would like to know how to do that.
I have a Grizzly metal lathe, 10 x 22 and I use it almost exclusively for wood working but I cannot find a way to make a wood spiral.
The spiral I would like to make is about 14" long, spiral depth about 1/2", and spiral spacing about 1".
Anybody got any ideas?
