Cup grinding wheels in a bench grinder?

I was just given an old craftsman bench grinder. The wheels need to be replaced because they're the original 36 and 60 grit gray wheels. Problem is this grinder takes 5" wheels, 1/2" wide with a 1/2" bore. Ive been looking for 5 inch white aluminum oxide wheels and Ive found one on MSC supply. Its a 5 inch by 1/2 wide wheel with a 1 inch bore, Ill have to get some adapters to fit it on the 1/2" arbor. Ive also found 5 inch straight cup wheels, they're 1 1/2" wide, with a 1/2" back and 1/2" rim. Could this be used on a bench grinder or is it just for surface grinders?

Heres the link to the straight cup wheels:

I was thinking abount removing the guard and using 6 inch wheels but finding 1/2" isn't much easier. The arbor with both flanges on could fit a 3/4" wheel but the nut wouldnt be on all the way. Any other ideas?
