My DeWally DeWon't

Hey all,
I have a ten year old (weekend warrior duty) DeWalt 733 lunchbox planer that has served well, but is getting very "cranky" (sorry for the pun) in its old age. When I try to lower the head below 3/4 inch (funny it sticks there, huh...) it gets really hard to turn. It will raise up easily from any point, just gets croctchety down low. gosh, it sounds like I'm talking about myself trying to get up out of a chair these days:p :p . I have lubed the screw mechanism with spray-on white lithium grease, but it didn't help much. I'm wondering if the springs are getting brittle.

Any ideas?

BTW, I'm too broke to spring for another planer right now.

Would it possibly have some wood chips under there that don't belong?

I have a 12" foley belsaw I use for moldings only.
Woodchips get embedded under the feedroller bushings, and shortly afterwards it get to not only snipping the last 6", it literally destroys the last 6".

I would be tempted to raise it up fully and have at the threads to make sure there isn't dried crude the lube just covered. Fine dust, grease and the compaction of the threads going into the housing could have just coated the threads a bit.

Take care, Mike
