Well i am having a tough, tough time these days with this big word.

After being baited into buying a jug of oil with a view to saving a few dollars but more importantly teaching my clean handed video game texting teenager how to get dirty and under a car, i decided to change the oil on Loml's car. This generation are going to get taken to the cleaners.

So get under to find the drain plug has been tightened or cross threaded so darn tight i now have had to postpone the job. Will try again later today this time with a pipe wrench seeing as how the vice grips would not do it.

I have been taking this car to the local 10 minute guys and they been a nice bunch i thought. But after this episode i am all out of trust.

I have dang had it with this word.

RANT ON

I am tired of being deceived and lied to. From Parents who felt it better to protect us from something rather than tell us the truth, through to governments and political leaders that thought they knew whats good for me and my country, through to school teachers that played along, down to bosses that lied while they had their hands in the till, to financial institutions that lied to steal your business from under you nose, to retailers with their deceiving adverts and to the latest an Airforce colonel of ours in Canada that committed some horific crimes and has just been sentenced and finally to the guy doing my oil change.

Never mind my extreme disapointment at fallen Priests, Scoutleaders etc that have been exposed in recent times.

RANT off

Sorry but its all been a bit too much. Is there anyone with integrity and honesty left in this world or am I on the wrong planet. Whats so hard to having these values.

I am i just old fashioned???? Does being in fashion mean you lie to everyone and cheat everyone you can just because you can?

Man this drain plug was the final straw that made me snap. Its a $6 item. You would think these guys of all people would know how to tighten it and even have spares for the various cars on hand in the event they find one thats had it from some previous butcher.

Its always been my belief that one has to spread the money around somewhat so guys in the service business actually get some trade, and the economy keeps turning, but this kind of thing makes me just plain mad.:bang::mad::pullhair:

Never mind this following on from an episode i had just recently doing my brakes. Had top of the line brakes shipped to my door for my Jeep including rotors for $356 all in and that from the USA direct so it included all the fees involved and it was not the cheapest supplier. Had them priced to be done by the guy i know up the road $1400. Now come on this just does not make sense. I did not want to pay the rent on his property for the whole month in one job. So he lost out and i did them myself and taught the youngster another lesson.

Whats going on???? Am i the only one loosing it. or am i :deadhorse:

Please tell me i am not alone.:(

You are not alone. Everyone wants to make the quickest buck possible, without breaking a sweat.

Due to being one of the gate keepers of the CoC, I shall refrain from further outburst. I could go on for days.

Thats probably one of the reasons I like to do so many things myself.

First new car I ever bought, first oil change, the incompetents and one of local quicky oil change places didn't tighten the drain plug tight enough and ALL the oil leaked out. Fortunately, I noticed the light and was able to keep the engine from burning up.

Took my truck in a few weeks ago before vacation to the Dealer because I wanted to make sure it was in tip top shape. We go to some really remote areas where communications are non-existant and help can be 100's of miles away. Got it home and the next day driving to the mail box the bolts holding the caliper on the front left popped off! Had it towed to the dealer and guess what, No Charge. They knew the messed up.

Just two more examples to add to your rant Rob...

I agree with Steve. Everyone wants to cut corners and make a quick buck. USA was once a manufacturing giant. People used to work hard and long hours. Now though, trying to make easy money is the new norm.

A few days ago there was an interesting story about rising obesity among young children in China. These kids are living the good life playing video games all day and eating junk food.

I guess with every rise comes the downfall.

Rob i'll add one more to the ever growing list.:( I took my truck down to mast tires, to get a new set of front only tires. Before i made it home( less than 1 mile) my driver side tire and wheel passed me. They had stripped all 5 lugs. Now to give William(owner) credit when i called him and told him what had happened, he fired the guy right then and there. Found out later that wasn't the first time the guy had done it. He also payed for all parts to get it fixed and offered to pay me for fixing it.
Steve

I lost my wallet once here in Tokyo, a city of 12 million people, I went to the cop shop and reported it missing, and then went to cancel all my credit cards etc. The next day the cops called, and they had my wallet. A high school kid found it and turned it in, all the cards, ID money etc were right were I left them, the kid would NOT accept any kind of reward, but I did give him a gift card to a book store for $50 and had the cops send it to his house, just to say thanks.

The whole world don't suck it is just that we have so much information at our finger tips now, and the old "If it bleeds it leads" is still very true.

I have faith and trust in my fellow man :thumb:

Stephen, yup been there done that and got the T shirt. Had it happen when i was passenger in a buddies car back in SA. We pulle out of the dealer and the right front wheel went flying.

Stu i too have been amazed by this aspect. My oldest son has had this happen at least 4 times. Left his wallet on the bus with all sorts and had it returned to the terminal numerous times. Each time we thought it was a gonner. Then he lost it in a local park and sure enough brought home to the door. Another time he had it fall out of his pockets in a parking lot and it was also returned. Each time will all the contents.

I think some of it has to do with sectors of business that are overtraded and so competitive that neglect takes place due to the whole relationship the company has with its employees. The more you devalue people the less reason they have to care. Management by fear seems the order of the day. I dont believe that has ever worked long term to get the best out of people.

I did not know until recently that mechanics here are essentially paid on piecework. If a car comes in to be worked on they get paid so much for the job required based on normal rates. If no work comes in they get nothing. Being a mechanic is a very honorable trade to me, just as important as a doctor. But we dont treat the two the same in society. Yet i have a left leg that would have made me millions had I had the surgery in North America with the blatant neglect committed by my "specialist orthopedic sugeon".

In the case of mechanics wages that was not the case where i came from. You hired a mechanic he was on the payrole. Customer got charged what the job took to do. Sounds great to have these standard metics by which a job should be performed but they are idealistic and dont cater for real life in my opinion. It would be great i am sure for guys to do the excercises on cars that have just come off the line. But when its been in our weather here for a few years and its full of rust, i dont see it being easy.

Hmmmmmmm, Sharon, you should be scared, very scared, I just typed a lengthy response to only delete it, thus we are on the same wavelength.
Rob, all is not lost, by posting your rant here, you are preaching to the choir. I honestly believe that is one major reason we all gather here. We are common in so many ways wether they are currently visible or not. Our underlying common sense, sense of value, sense of right and wrong, of God and respect, we are magnetically attracted. Thus stronger than a single.

Ahh Rob I have come to accept the things that I can not change. Change the things that I can and to know the difference. There are those out there only thinking of themselves but there are also a good bunch of people out there that don't. You can't let the misguided people get to you. You are better than that. I am better than that and I keep telling myself that each and every day. I was raised right and I smile every day even when I don't feel like it as a smile is a wonderful thing. Even when people are upset with you or having a bad day, a smile will make them not be so upset and it might chnage their day for the better. How you look at things is all in perspective. The world is a tough place but you can be a shinning spot in such a dark world.

Always remember the Hawain rules ( I have this hanging over my desk)

Never judge a day by the weather.
The best things in life aren't things.
Tell the truth -there is less to remember.
Speak softly and wear a loud shirt.
Goals are deceptive- the unaimed arrow never misses
He who dies with the most toys still dies.
Age is reletive- when your over the hill you pick up speed.
Two ways to be rich earn more or desire less.
Beauty is internal- looks mean nothing.
No rain, no rainbows.

Wow ------ Trust

Wow - What a thread.

WoodPenMan / LaserImageArts ( Me ) has shipped hundreds of orders then worries about how to get paid. I have people ask are you waiting for the check to clear to ship. I tell them I am not even waiting for you to send the check. The items ships when it is ready and payment gets here when it does.

In the last 8 years or so I have been burnt by this practice exactly ZERO times. This includes shipments to maybe 8 different countries.

Recently I had a small order where payment took some time. I told him if I had been aware of a problem I probably would have done the work for no charge and that my 100% record was worth way more to me than the small amount of money involved. Well I received payment with way to much interest (which I told him I just wanted the original amount but he included interest anyway ) and now WoodPenMan is back to 100% paying customers.

There are lotza good people around a good many of them right here on this forum.

But then there are places like dealerships or tire places. Sir - Looks like the only part on your care that does not need to be replaced is the gas cap and we will test that again to make sure we did not make a mistake.

If I am getting one specific thing like a tire or 2 I tell them do not touch anything else. If that car catches on fire and I need to purchase a 10 cent bottle of water to put it out ------> Let it burn.

After that speech one time they still came out with my cabin air filter that needed replacement.Thay told me they had already cleaned the big pieces off.

I said "You dumped that dust? That was special dust gathered from the base of the pyramids and that I wanted it back. " At that point they knew they were dealing with a real nut case. But I did not buy the $35 filter that I later picked up for about $6.

What you rant about holds a lot of water. I remember as a kid, my Dad used to trust the guy that worked on his car, he trusted the teller at the bank, and he trusted the local carpenter.

Those days are long gone. And the funny thing is that it is up to us to bring those days back. How do we do it?

By patronizing the good business's and making sure that everyone knows about the bad ones. We do it with people in our neighborhood all the time. Should be the same with business's. And it should be the same with politicians. In some ways...a lot of our problems started with the politicians. The type of laws they pass, the values they portray, etc etc

The light at the end of the tunnel might be dim...but it is there. We, the honest and trustworthy folks have to make sure that it rubs off on our kids and other youngsters. Not always easy...but that is what I try to do.

Four times!?!? Man, Rob, you need to get your son to start carrying his wallet in his front pocket, so it can't fall out so easy.

My wife has often told me that my biggest problem is that I trust people. I've been disappointed in people exactly once. Ubfortunatly it was a business partner when I had my tool and fastener store. That has not changed my opinion that the majority of people are honest. I was brought up to respect and live the "do unto others" philosophy.

Of course you have to be cautious at times and street smart.

Oh, almost forgot. Are you nuts??? bringing your car to an oil change place is asking for trouble :rofl::rofl:
Everyone I know has a "quick" oil change horror story.

You bring up an interesting point there Dom with the polititians. They do a very difficult job of juggling all the special intrest groups and everyone feeling that they have the right idea. Look at our most recent situiation with the Tamel migrants that landed on our shores. I feel that the cue jumpers should be sent right back to where they came from. No hearings just on the next flight ( at our expense ) home. Send a message to everyone else. I mean we are neighbors and with miles of unprotected borders who knows who is going to cross. Look at Randy Quaid and his wife a warrent out for their arrest and they just walk across the border and into Vancouver now they are seeking refugee status due to fear for their lives from "Hollywood star-whackers." Ok I know we sent you Celin Dion but come on Can't ya just keep the nuts there?:rofl::rofl:

Hey, Just a friendly reminder about the CoC.

I'd say if we keep this on the original topic were ok, but it's starting to slide into Political land...

Thanks for your cooperation folks. :thumb:

What Drew said +1.

I have this theory of life that it's like a Bell Curve. There are a few really great, wonderful, honest, etc. people at one end, and a few really awful terrible people at the other, and the vast majority are in between. Sometimes you have the good fortune of coming across an environment where most of the people are on the good end (like this forum).

But by and large, by accepting that view, I'm not often disappointed. My grandmother used to say, "if you live long enough, you see everything." She lived to 94.

And that's why I use the word "friend" carefully. My "friends" are the ones that I could call in the middle of the night if I had a problem. And I'm the one that has gotten those same calls more than once. Friends are the ones that I can trust with my house, my kids or my dogs. That's how I define friends. A good friend is hard to find. Everyone else is an acquaintance.

With everything else, getting stuff fixed, relying on people, trades etc., my policy is "trust, but verify."

I had a tire store issue once.

#1 visit to mount snow tires they snap the stud off the right front hub assembly. I have it repaired at the dealer and eat the cost.

#2 visit to remove the snow tires I tell them what happened last time and they say - Ok-We'll be more careful. When I come back to pickup the car and when they put the lug nut from the newly broken stud on the counter I freak out. I get the repair part and they install it.

Never graced their place with my presence again. Bought spare rims and installed the snows myself from then on.

Later on I was changing the belts myself and snapped a stud on the alternator or power steering assembly. I drove it to the local mechanic and he fixed it. I never worked on that car myself again. The 85 Mitsubishi hardware wasn't that strong I guess.

I do my own oil and filters on the 2 cars - they use an impact gun for the pan bolts and crank the filters on. I don't save any money on the dealer oil change "specials" but I know it's being done right.

I have trust issues with dealer service - I've been hosed a few times and it's just scary how brazen they have become.

Nuff said.

Cheers

Jim
