I've lived in Tellico Plains for the last five years and have driven by this tree maybe at least every week or so... this weekend we dropped my stepson at the local barber which is located just behind this house and then walked around the corner to the bakery... first time in 5 years that I've actually taken a close look at the tree... there are actually two of them and I'm not sure which is which as the wife took the pictures and it kinda looks like she alternated back and forth between the two.... both have been topped at about 12 to 15 feet because of the power lines and are about a good 3 ft diameter... lots of gnarls and burls...

When i was a little kid I used to take a saw in the woods and find trees with burls. I'd cut them off and using my pocket knife carve bowls and spoons out of them for gifts for my Mom. I'd never heard of a lathe back then :D
Every time I gave her one she would hug me and start to cry. I didn't think that they were that ugly :)

Sorry for the trip down memory lane Chuck. What kind of tree is that?
