The first mac we bought was the Mac Mini, it has recently been updated and is even better than it was, and the really cool thing for people switching from Windoze is that you use you existing keyboard, mouse, monitor and printer, if that stuff is not too old. Saves you some money, and if you have a fairly spiffy 17" or larger flatscreen monitor, then you get to keep using that 
I think that most of the factory reconditioned units would be returns or units that had minor problems and have been fixed, so they should be better than the untried new units, in some aspects.
