Why Change the Name

Something that gets under my skin rather quickly is changing the name of a tool over a period of time but it seems some people are dead set on doing just that.

Chop Saw and Miter Saw for example. Two different tools used for a purpose about as far apart as one can get.

Then we get to the Jig Saw, Scroll Saw
and Saber Saw. Those saw names have been screwed around over the years until I have no idea what to call one.

Why in the world can't we just stay with the names they were given by the inventor?

Rant over and I feel better now. Well almost.

An O is in the alphabet and a 0 is in our numbering system. Saying O for 0 in my opinion is just pure laziness and probably the most often mistake made in our English speech. Professional reporters are even on the band wagon on this one.

Now I really feel gooder/better.:D

Well an O is an O. While a 0 is a zero not an O:thumb::thumb::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Funny thing happened.....the last four of my SSN is 0110. While getting ready for a medical procedure, I was talking by phone with some young lady trying to confirm information and she rattled my SSN as xxx-xx-oh one one oh, "is that correct?" and I responded , "Yes, zero one one zero." And she was completely lost.....several seconds of silence and she repeated the question....to which I responded with the same answer. I think she went off the air entirely this time and finally went to the next question on the list. Don't know if she ever fully recovered.:dunno: That's where your tax dollars for ejumakashun are going.

A lot of us are in, or probably know someone who is, in a technical field. Zero is always a zero, the opposite of right is left and the opposite or wrong is correct. . . oh, and 4pm is 1600 to me; has been for almost 30 years :).

Or I might have said that a zero is always a zero unless it is following a 1, then its an "A" (sorry, hexadecimal joke).

Or I might have said that a zero is always a zero unless it is following a 1, then its a 2 (sorry, octal joke)

. . . wait a minute; those aren't even funny . . . must be time for bed. My apologies.

and A follow 9 followed by B,C,D,F and back to 0

I see then and than used interchangeably many times on this forum.

They have very different meanings. Not unlike miter -- chop saws.

I know a few friends that wear a miter on their heads.

How many use a spell checker on this forum?
How many should use a spell checker this forum?
How many just don't care about spelling?
Wish I could spell without the help of a spell checker.

My point?

English is spoken by 1,860,570,082 people in the world, or at least in they live in countries that the "Official" language is English. You can bet that there will be a LOT of different ways to say things.

In fact a saying I've heard before is "The United States of America, one nation, divided by a common language" or something to that effect.:D

One size does NOT fit all folks

Actually Stu,
A state senator of Japanese decent sponsored a bill and it was voted in making English the official language of the state of California. We outside of California however are a bit more tolerant.

:D We even tolerate folks in Arizona who speak Canuk....

A 1 followed by a 0 in octal? That'd be 8, sleepyhead. :D

Reminds me of a t-shirt I have:

There are only 10 kinds of people in this world.
Those who understand binary and those who don't. :p
