Finishing 1920's Mahogany

I took in two dressers that were red mahogany. I needed to get a return color very similar to the original but when you take into fact that they were french polished and years of dirt and yellowing you can not just use red mahogany, you need to supplement other colors to reach the old color. This is my formula for matching the old look.

1. 1 part red mahogany
2. 1 part hickory
3. 1/4 dark green
4. equal part or sealer to color and the rest thinner in a quart cup.
This makes a great penetrating stain. Then apply 3 coats of sealer after you get the right tone. Then sand apply another coat of sealer and light sand with 320 and then 2-3 coats of finish.

It came out rather nice in Pre cat lacquer satin.

Darren it's a very nice color. What is great about the way I stain is that the color can be removed by stripping. Most oil stains can not be, plus with oil penetrating stains under lacquer I've encountered alligatering from the oil stain not drying properly.
