    Drew started it... Whale shots

Drew posted some Orca shots over in this thread, and the Ambassador expressed an interest, so I dug these up:

These are from this past August, when we went whale-watching off Brier Island, which is on the extreme West (and a bit north) end of Nova Scotia.

We got to spend about 20-30 minutes "visiting" with a trio of Humpbacks. Mom + Child, + Friend were hanging out in the Bay of Fundy.

Quite a fun time and very exhilarating to see these massive creatures floating past

Those are beautiful shots Art. We have them out this way too and the whale watcher tours take people out on Zodiacs to see them. One day I might come across some when we get the kayaks built and start exploring. I personally would love to dive with them.

Great shots, Art. Looks like you had one that was real interested in the boat.

Drew, around here it's illegal to pilot a boat within something like 200 yards of whales (I don't recall the exact distance), so they don't have the Zodiac or kayak excursions. But if the boat is stopped and the whales come up to check you out, it's OK. If you go south of here to Mexico though, you can find tour operators who'll run up as close as the whales will let them.

When we lived in California my son drove a Van load of folks down to Baja where they took the people out to the whales and you could even pet the wales. He has picture taken of him petting a whale.

Sounds like you have the same type of laws that we do in regards to all whales. The zodiacs will get people close but only so close then they have to back off and it is very regulated. The DFO ( department of fisheries and oceans ) does keep an eye on them.
