Fire Hazards

The article you may be remembering Vaughn might be some of Bill Pentz's research on dust collection. http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm I have found this an excellent read in regards to the real dangers of wood dust and dust collection.

Cynthia, one of the real dangers in regards to fire in the shop is improper disposal of rags soaked with oils and stains and solvents. I do know of folks who have burned their shops down by just throwing rags in a trash barrel without letting them dry first.

I work with resins that cure by catalytic reaction that generates heat. The refuse usually goes right in the outdoor wood boiler.

I store most of my refuse in metal trash cans and try to empty them at the end of the day before I leave the shop.

Ditto on keeping the proper fire extinguishers handy.
