Frank, did you feel the earthquake?

My Brother in Law is a Driller, he and his crew are never home. My wifes sister will often go to where his rig is set up and spend a weekend with him, otherwise they'd never have a married life. He's got a trailer that he lives in thats goes along when they move the rig.

Frac'ing may not be causing earthquakes around here, but a related process where they "inject" the toxic leftovers back into the ground seems to have a direct relationship - at least according to the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission and USGS:

The 4.7 quake that hit around 11pm this past Sunday shook our house enough that all the windows and doors shook and rattled and a 32" TV in an armoire was shaking (I was standing right beside it when it hit). It lasted for 4-5 seconds. Now I know you folks in California are used to little shakes like this, but not us Arkies....

There's an article in the times explaining the process: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/27/us/27gas.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

Mostly it's about what happens to all that water and fluid. No earthquakes so far in western Pennsylvania. When I lived there, I heard stories of coal fires that had burned for years, but never actually saw one. I did see a lot of torn up landscape. But evidently, they've got many thousands of new wells just in the last few years, and it's changing the landscape again. Eerie beauty in the Colorado night forest:

Hi Mark,
Yes, you are near it all. Coincidentially, in the news last night it was reported that a definate link had been established between the drilling/fracking and the quakes. The gas company, of course, denied the connection. There are meetings and hearing going on today.
It will be interesting to see the outcome. We need the gas and the boost in economy it will bring but that has to be balanced with the health, safety and quality of life for those living nearby who are affected.
