Last Chance

Well, this was probably my last chance to get anything done on my lathe until the fall or winter. My small business keeps me really busy this time of year but here are a few shots of my latest creations.
I hope you like them.
This is a spalted maple plate about 10" in diameter. The maple is at about the softest that I have ever turned. It is finished with bees wax and mineral oil. I was lucky enough to find a buyer for it.

This one I think is even more interesting. I was given a bias cut slab of maple. Most of it was badly cracked especially around the pith but I was able to get a few small blanks. Not the growth rings which are at about 45 degrees to the face of the bowl. It is a small bowl only about 4.5 inches wide and 2.5 high but the pattern of growth rings makes it, in my mind, at least a really special bowl.

Looks like you certainly made out well with your last chance!

Looks wonderful, the second one is very cool, I don't think I've seen Maple cut on a bias like that :thumb:

The spalted maple piece is gorgeous. You said you were lucky to find a buyer for the bowl. I'd think the buyer was more lucky to find you and the bowl. ;)

And I also really like the bias-cut bowl. I've done a few similar ones, and I really like the grain pattern it produces.

Very well done on both counts. :thumb:

Soooo Nice

So many nice people saying so many nice things.
Thanks to all of you.
Bernie, a Bias cut, I believe, is when a tree or log is cut across it's width at an angle to the growth rings say at 45 degrees to the outside of the tree. This returns a much larger cross section with slanted ends, usually an oval shape which is favoured by many people as a table top. I have seen quite a few that were drilled and made into Cribbage boards! One would need quite a long trunk section to cut in this manner and as far as wood turners go it would likely waste a lot of wood.

Very nice Peter...I don't think I could go as long as it sounds you will without time at the lathe, but good to hear your business is busy! :thumb:

Your site

Hi Raymond. Thanks for the note and as a web designer myself, through no fault of my own, I am always interested in comments re my sites.

I am FAR from a professional designer but I noticed a few things when I went to your site, and have a little constructive criticism, hopefully you won't mind. Looks like the formatting of the Title is just a little off, I get a few extra spaces.

Secondly I tried to follow the link to your bottle stoppers but wind up here:

Just thought you would like to know.

Glad to hear that you are able to sell so much of your work. I struggle to sell only a few pieces each year, congratulations!
