A couple of segmented pepper mills

I've also finished a couple of segmented pepper mills... the first is 10 inches tall, a crush grind mechanism... I prefer the C/G mechanisms because they allow me to be a little less exact in my measurements... this one is from the corner pieces of the blank I glued up... I ran the corners through a friend's joiner and glued them back together, then cut at an angle again.... the second mill is a 13 1/4 tall... I found a C/G mechanism at CSUSA that has an 18" shaft so I can make a much larger mills now... have to try for one later... this one came out of the middle of the glue up blank I made... the woods are blood wood, purplehear, Brazilian ebony, a yellow wood.. not yellow heart, but similar, and brazilian cherry.... the first 3 pictures are the smaller mill and the second 3 are the taller mill....
The last 4 is a second tall mill I'm working on... this picture only has the first coat of poly on it...
Hope the pictures look okay... they were quick and dirty in the shop so I could send pictures of the bowls to my wife's girlfriend.

That's a good months worth of work! Very nice blanks and shapes. Would you consider selling some of those glue-up's?

Jim,
I've used up the ones I made up the last go round... but they are so simple to do... just cut boards in 3" wide strips, plane, sand or run through a joiner so the sides are flat... glue them together and then decide what angle you want to cut them.... I start at one corner and mark off every 3 inches top and bottom, then cut from the top corner to the second mark at the bottom.... you can cut at any angle and will get the same effect, just a different loop, depending on how steep your angle is.....
I generally will glue up enough boards that I have a block about 12-14 inches long (you can go longer if you want... your choice) by about 12-14 inches wide and 3 inches thick... ( I like to start a pepper mill at 3 x 3 x length...) mark your first cut at the same width as the width of the original boards...(in my case 3") then cut every 3 inches on what ever angle you choose... the cut off corners can then be put through a joiner to flatten the cut again and glue back together and start again....

Next time I make up a block, I can let you know if you're interested or haven't done your own...you can use any combination of lumber you want.... just keep in mind that some woods are softer than others... doesn't have any real negative affect on the block though.

Chuck now we talking. That is some neat spinny work. Personally i like segment turning. In my mind unless one is lucky to get hold of a special piece of wood for a unique looking bowl, then a good segment turned item beats it inmho. Well done those should sell like hotcakes. :)
