Back when I tried the sandpaper method, I got a piece of 3/8" glass and had the glass company smooth the edges. Worked great. I put four rubber feet on it to keep it from moving around.
I have to add a comment, however. The WS 3000 is a great way to sharpen your blades. If your blade is too wide to go into the port, you can do it from the top. Put a primary bevel of about 25* on it, then go to your stones and put a secondary bevel of maybe 30 or 35*.
When the secondary bevel gets too long, just go back to your WS3000 and grind the primary bevel again.
Very quick and easy and not as much mess as the sandpaper.
