On another site, a fellow advised me to apply a 1# cut coat of dewaxed shellac on bare wood before applying milk paint. Everything I've read about milk paint says to apply it to bare wood. Anybody else have experience with this method? The wood I'm using is both hemlock and pine, and there are some knots. Opinions welcome.

Thanks,
Ken

That sounds like it will work but is not necessary except on closed grained woods. The Old Fashoned Milk Paint Company recommends acrylic...like what the ceramics people use. The milk paint doesnt adhear as well to closed grain woods as it does open grain and the acrylic fixes that.

edit: personally I wouldn't want to hide the knots on the pine, if they bleed through then the piece looks rustic....probably like it's supposed to.
