This is the first doug gouge i've ever owned. After all the good things i've heard about them,i took some of the money i got from the table i'm building, and got this 1/2"bowl gouge. Just got home from work and it was sitting on the table whating on me. Can't what to try it.

Excellent choice. Among my various Thompson tools, I have the 1/2" and 5/8" bowl gouges in the U and V shapes, and use all four pretty much all the time. (The 3/4" V and 3/8" shallow detail gouge also get used on nearly every piece.) Eventually you'll be adding to the one you just got. They really are that good.

In my opinion, Doug's tools have been the best for several years. The new Glaser tools seem to be comparable steel-wise, and I'm sure they're excellent tools, but the Thompson tools are a lot more affordable. Nothing in their price range come close, and with the exception of the Glaser tools, nothing in ANY price range comes close.
