I got this forwarded to me and got quite a chuckle.

The continuing saga of Sheriff Joe Arpaio . . . .
Update on Joe Arpaio
TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona ) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails so he hooked up the cable TV again with only the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton -- If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on tape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year . "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers' money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.
NOW THAT'S A PRISON, AND THE WAY IT SHOULD BE!!
A DETERRENT

Gee, Woodnet turned all tan.

Sorry, looks pretty political to me.

John

Except for a reference to d'crats, it looks fine to me.
I cast my (non)vote for keeping.
I can see where it might offend some..... but I'm with Frank - Take out the one reference and you lesson the 'political' significantly.

PS - Frank - 121,000 on my Dodge Ram transmission and still going strong....with fingers crossed.:D

I don't have an opinion one way or another on this post. I've seen documentaries on this guy before.

That said, we have removed posts for less in the past. Just my .02

Cross 'em tight. But have $1500.00 ready, jest for when it happens. Don't go far from home.

Darn. And here I was, telling everyone who would listen that I'd finally found a non-contentious woodworking site, a refuge of peace and sanity in an insane world. Is this how it starts? Do things just go down from here, until we end up like all the rest, until we all have to don flak jackets before logging on to the battle zone?

Does anyone know where we can find peace and harmony and a little sawdust? ;)

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, hang in there. I think you will find a pretty civil discussion about this thread. We have had several pop up and discussion to determine the best course of action. I can assure you there is a really great group of people here and everyone's voice is heard. There is however rules and it is up to the membership to figure out how to interpret them. It is easy to be cynical after seeing some of the other forums, but I really think this one is different.

Give it a chance!

Bill - I second what Ed has stated. We're a civil bunch as indicated in this thread so far - note that the discussion has not denigrated into a slug-fest but has centered around the appropriateness of the thread with several people weighing in. Everyone will have the opportunity to judge whether or not they feel the thread crosses the line based on their interpretation of the TOS. The mods will watch and wait, and then, when it seems everyone has had a say, they will make a decision based on the thoughts of the majority. They're a patient and long suffering group our mods :thumb: .

I firmly believe that things will not get out of hand. I base that on my experience with this forum and communications, both in threads and in PM's, with its members. This is a great group of WW's and probably the most civil and polite group you are likely to find. My hats off to all (and a big thanks for letting me stick around to enjoy it!):D

We're all still learning and threads like this one help us to search the limits of our convictions and causes each of us to examine our commitment to, and understanding of, the TOS. We grow, we understand, and we move on.

Don't give up on us so quickly. Stay. Watch. Grow with us.:)

Wow sorry guys! Didn't think this would be such a hot potato. I spent lots of time growing up in the South and knew several sheriffs like this "tough old bird." (not from crossing them    ) No mater what people think positive or negative about what he is doing I'll bet the crime rate in his town is LOW :) :)

Again sorry for the storm.

Wow, I'm amazed.

Speechless even.

My mistake, apologies all around.

John, don't worry, all opinions and points of view are valued here, heck even mine

To Ed and Rennie, thanks for the support, but if you REALLY want to see what the Mods do, up close and personal, stand for election (if you have not yet done so) :thumb: :D

Everyone else, thanks for keeping it civil, and don't forget to vote!

(I wonder if that is too political....... ) ................Just kidding!

Arpaio, A good man.

The sheriff, himself, is quite a story as he was the original French connection person.

Why the pink underwear? Because when they issued white ones, the prisoners were stealing them and sending them home when they had visitors.

In addition to chain gangs, he has a volunteer mounted patrol.

Reading one of his books is informational and entertaining.

Every time I talk to a local deputy sheriff, I as then if the jail is air conditioned. The say yes, and I ask them why. Of course they don't have an answer. Then I ask them if the county has chain gangs. Answer NO, and don't know why.

Crime is not a political issue, at least it should not be. It is done by the poor and the wealthy without regard to who or what the victim might be.

I thought that was Eddie Egan & Sonny Grosso :dunno:

Having thought about it a while longer, and also having poked around looking for some evidence of the absurd claim above,
I have to re-iterate my objection to this thread.

Mr. Arpaio is an elected official. Discussions of the success or failure of his policies are just as political as discussions
of the success or failure of a president's policies. The rule is no politics, and for good reason.

In the interests of diplomacy, I'll drop it now, but I have to say we've failed a test.

John, I read that he was the French connection in the front part of his first book. Now, it may have been literary license or I misread it, but for certain was an agent for the "good guys," or the book is wrong.
