Yet a different approach would be adapting the procedure shown in the attached graphic. This shows the construction we used on a large set of doors for one project in a commercial shop. In that case, the center panel was veneer over MDF. I think one could adapt the concept to drawer fronts without too much pain - just some time.
For drawer fronts, of course, this would be horizontal rather than vertical. It's basically a raised panel wrapped with a frame. The inner panel is wrapped with a mitered frame to eliminate end grain; it also allows you to make the grain continuous around the frame. The outer frame would probably look better mitered for drawer fronts, but that's optional.
