For those of you old enough to remember the saying, I've finally figured out the difference:

For those of you old enough to remember Steve Martin's movie, The Jerk, there's a line referring to the saying.
For those of you with no idea what I'm writing about, forget it.

actually that saying goes back long before the movie, I remember my dad saying it about some folks knowledge about certain things.

Cool find. Ken. Like Don, I had heard the saying long before the movie. I guess it never dawned on me that some folks wouldn't know what Shinola was.

I know the saying preceded the movie. I just added that so the somewhat younger folks, who hadn't heard the original, might recognize it from the Jerk.

Great old saying. My dad used to use it and I picked it up from him.

    Great find Ken.

Great old saying... my dad used it back in the late '40's and early '50's... picked it up myself around that time.

My parents taught me to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder to find any.

I'm faniliar with the saying, but here in Canada I'm more used to hearing that certain people cannot distinguish a certain part of their bodies from a hole in the ground, or that they can't find the same body part in the dark with both hands.
