    G0586 jointer for $400. I was tempted.

    http://ventura.craigslist.org/tls/2989279505.html

But I decided against pulling the trigger because:

    1. I would like to add spiral cutter head (about $400)
    2. I would have to add a mobile base (about $100)
    3. Since Vaughn is not available, I'd have to rent a truck plus gas expenses (about $80)
    4. New 8" jointers are 3 HP vs 2 HP on G0586

Hope I made the right decision.

Not sure if it is good for you but if I saw it up here for $400 I would of snapped it up pretty quick. My 6" jointer is a workhorse but I really need to upgrade to an 8".

That's a tough call. I'd think $400 is a good price for that machine. It should work pretty nicely with the regular knives, so it could still be used until you have the funds to get the spiral cutterhead. On the other hand, Westlake Village isn't exactly close to you, and like you said, McMillan Machinery Moving is temporarily out of business. And when you add up the ultimate prices of everything to get it delivered and set up the way you want, you're not too far off from the cost of a new 3 hp machine with a mobile base and spiral head.

I think you made the right decision.

i havnt seen the numbers like vaughn has but if your close in the total of the old machine with the upgrades then buy new.. its worth the wait for a spiral head setup.. i am still wishing i had dropped the coin for a up grade on my planer.. and if can figure out a way i am gonna do it.. they are so much nicer and quieter as well

Yeah Vaughn, I miss McMillan Moving a lot.

Larry, I guess I will wait and buy the machine that I want.
