    Granite is good for turning!

Well, not really, just looks like it...

This blank was sold to me as "spalted maple", but obviously there's a lot more going on here than just simple spalting:

About 5-1/2"x2-1/2". Very soft, about like turning styrofoam, with about a pint of CA glue providing most of the structural integrity. Inside is pretty rough, but anyone who sticks their fingers in deserves whatever happens: there may very well still be something alive in there.
Where are we going? And what am I doing in this handbasket?

Looks mighty fine to me Lee. You couldn't tell by the picture that the wood was soft or punky. Did a right fine job on it Sir.

Very nice, Lee. The punky pieces are a bear to get a smooth cut...looks like you got it worked out, though. The figure in the wood is definitely worth the price of admission.

Very pretty Lee. Thank you for showing.

BTW: Granite will break your pen bits and grind down anything except diamond tools of which I have none
