I hadn't done much with fir outside of timber framing. Just did a 400' run of casing out of it. What a great wood. Machines well, sands cool, and even smells pleasant. I think I'm going to try selling a kitchen out of it.

Not cheap though, sold by the lineal foot through my supplier. Basically cost me $5.33 bd/ft
 
I know if your lumber yard will let you puck through the cunstrucion grade pine, if you know what your looking for you can find fir mixed in with the pine boards. I've found quite a few in 1x6 stock too. Gotta do some digging though.
 
Interesting how things are regional. I see you two are from Minnesota and Canada. About 500 miles south in the center of the USA, fir is one of the "default" woods. Lumberyards and big box stores carry construction grade lumber in white pine and fir. Dimensional up to 2x12x16' is about the biggest I've seen it. Of course, that IS construction grade lumber....
