Regular visitor lately. He has been killing and eating the tiny lizards around the house. Downside is the lizards kill and eat bugs and insects. Oh, well. It is the life cycle.

We have a couple of redtails that live in one of the tall pines over our back yard.

Too small for a Redtail. I am pretty certain it is a Kestrel.
BTW, the big skull is from our (former) farm. The cow was one of our favorites, she met an unfortunate demise.

Great pic. Was leaning towards a Broad Wing hawk, but hard to tell without seeing the lower part of the head and belly,

Markings are different. But, after looking up pics, I'm not sure it is a Kestrel. I think it is bigger than a Kestrel.

I don't suppose it dawned on you to just ask it for some ID while it was in the yard, huh?

Jeepers. I was going to mention that we frequently have hawks nest in a big tree out back of the house. Our property goes back 190 feet. I don't know if the tree is on our property or the people across the canyon. Anyway, they are not real close. All I get is the 10x binoculars view.
I have not seen any indication of lizards for lunch; we have quite a few of them. However, everyone got off on the kestral, broad wing, green card, etc. bit and all I know is that they are birds with a reddish color and look like hawks and have babies that look like hawks.

I have a couple of hawks that hang around here too... not sure what kind they are, but they sure scatter the doves when they fly by.... had one strike a dove just outside the shop and drove it to the ground, but didn't get a good grip and the dove got away... talk about wings whistling when the dove took off for the tall trees across the road....
