Finishing Cherry

Jeff at Target coatings has advised against using zinser sealcoat or any of their shellacs as an underbody for their finishes. He said that there have been problems with the finish "crazing" and adhesion issues. Something to do with zinsers process and ph levels... (chemist talk) he said if shellac is going to be the choice for underbody then to mix it from dewaxed flake a 1 or 2 lb cut. This is what I have done since and never had a problem. I have also used a 1/2 lb cut as a wash coat before spraying wb stains or dyes on blotchy woods like pine and maple with excellent results
