I am in process ( just beginning) of making a captive hollowing system. I have a Jet 1642 lathe. My ? is on the actual captive bars would it be best to go with 3/4" or 1" square tubing ? I have 2 pieces of 3/4" and a piece of 1". I am going to use the 1" on the base part down on the lathe ways and the 3/4" ones I was going to use as the actual captive bars. I read that most of the stress is on the original tool rest. I could take one of the the 3/4" bars back with no problem and the 1" is only a little more. I had one of the 3/4" ones already. As always Thanks a bunch !!

I think mine is made with 1" square tubing for the top and bottom capture bars. Don't know for sure, but I suspect the 3/4" tubing might flex a bit.
