For whatever reason I was thinking about this and the belt sander comment.
I couldn't function with out belt sanders. I've got five. Three handheld, (one is just sitting on the shelf waiting for the other to breakdown), and two stationary. One is the edge sander, and one is the widebelt.
Sure, everything could be done with planes and scrapers, but why? Those tool still have their place, but it'd be like pushing for horses as a replacement to the automobile.
