Hand sawing and lubrication.....mutton fat

What do you think about it now that you've had more time to play with it, Dennis?

Have you tried it on morticing chisels and saws yet? Talk about slick!

BTW - for those that don't know (Dennis does) I rendered up approx 20 oz of mutton tallow a few months back and have been playing with it - I like it!

I smear a bit of it on all of my edge tools. It does a nice job of reducing friction and gives a bit of rust protection.

The only place that I have used it and have not been totally happy is on the sole of my 4 1/2 C. It collects in the grooves, and then collects dust. The candle wax that I used before does not cause this issue. Not a huge problem, but an observation.

Yeah, I've the same... particularly because all but a few of my iron bench planes are C's. I found a wipe down with a soft terry cloth cleans it out pretty well. I've mainly switched back to Renaissance Way for the plane soles for that reason though.

The other thing you might try though is only putting a light wipe at the toe, heel and around the mouth and avoid the corrugations all together.
