Plumber Question

When you get old your brains leak out. Therefore I cannot quite remember how to do something I have done several times before.

QUESTION: When you drain the water out of the system to get rid of "knock" what do you do about the hot water tank? Ignore it? Turn it off and drain it also? Other?

I know to turn off the water, open the faucet in the highest part of the plumbing system, drain from the faucet in the lowest part of the plumbing system.
