    a steel question

    Anybody here know what kind of steel 50cvr4 is? It is from a part on an Italian built gun. The manufacturer told me it is made of this kind of steel. Means nothing to me. I want to know how to hardern it.
    Google was no help.

    Trying to remember from my steel fastening days....A36 was mild steel and grade 50 was hardened.

    http://www.ask.com/question/what-is-cr4-grade-steel
    http://www.steelnumber.com/en/steel_...hp?name_id=199 (part way down the path it has the comparable SAE )
    CR4 appears to be close to the same as SAE1008

    CR4 is a "Mild" (low carbon) steel: 0.05% to 0.26% (e.g. AISI 1018 steel).

    I think the 50 refers to the current hardness (although I don't know in what measure).

    Hmm to fast

    Is it 50Cr4 or 50Cr4V2 hah

    http://www.steelstrip.co.uk/internat...uivalents2.htm
    50Cr4V2 = SAE 9260

    Some more details on CR4 composition and probable max hardness of 50 HRB http://www.materialgrades.com/iso-35...steel-588.html
    which lines up with my vague theory that its CR4 and 50 hardness.
