Gun Rack

I have the need to build a gun rack. What size gun rack do you have and how many guns does it hold?

Is it for the house or the truck?

My dad used to have a couple of really nice glass display cases. One for the long guns and one for the pistols.

Both are long gone.

I'd only have a gun rack if it was to keep one handy by the front door, and I'd put it in the safe when I was gone.

Then again at $304 for the 17 gun rack if I can find the butt cups I might just be able to out bid them:thumb:

Brent back in the early 80's we went to a friend's house in TRC NM He was at work when we arrived. So we went on in and made ourselves at home. The guy we went with said as we went in just so you know we are probably gonna come across a gun or two when we go in. Yes they will be loaded. He was right just inside the door a 12 gauge leaning up next to the door. Two steps to the fridge and a 45 laying on top of it. A 30-30 next to the couch and a 44 on the end table. All loaded seems to me we had a man that was paranoid about someone busting in on him but had no fear that someone might bust in and steal his guns.

So a run with my friend Google and I have yet to find the plastic butt cups that company uses. Would ya use some sort of flocking or just leave them plain wood?

Chuck, here are a couple of ideas, http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/...gun-curio-slider-cabinet-combo.aspx?a=1537647

Chuck, I looked at the racks you showed. Why not router the butt groove? The description on your page says, "-Pocket openings in the base are 5-1/2" long by 2" wide" so why not just router and either flock or glue in some material as Larry suggested?

Could cut felt or cork liners, but perhaps consider doing a two layer bottom, cut your "ovals" out in one piece and layer some felt/cork between it and a solid bottom piece.

I've had good success with the Suede-Tex flocking on the dividers in a pool cue case I made 7 or 8 years ago. The case gets nearly weekly use, and the flocking has held up real well. I think it'd work fine for gun butt pockets.

I have a request to build a rack in a 8' X 7' safe One corner of it will be for long guns at 5' x 5' I might just lose the job and send this link to them http://www.gun-racks.com/all_rotary_gun_racks It looks like that might be the best way to git alot of guns in a small space.

I'm one of those kinda paranoid guys. We are pretty isolated and it would take less time to murder and rob us thant it would take the sheriff to get here.
I have a safe for those not at hand. Those rotary racks look simple to build but they do seem to suffer from some design issues. e.g. some don't clear scopes, others don't clear bolt actions, etc. And the band held ones look like they would all fall out if you release the band to remove one. But, I'm sure you could design around those issues. I do have concerns about display racks due to lack of security.

Well I layed one of them out on a sheet of ply and it looks like I can get two of them in the space allotted. I can not beat the online price but we shall see what happens. I could beat it if I had me one of those cnc routers that would cut out all the parts while I had lunch.:thumb:

Sell him the factory-made racks at your cost, and have him pay you to install it. Or sell to him at cost + X% with a free (or discounted) installation. That way he gets a good deal and you get a bit of income out of it, too.

I have even a different view. Why not use the online price as your cost for the material side and markup and add installation.
Just because something is available online first it does not mean he has found it, or has the desire to order and diy. Not everyone is like us.
You either offer an added value service for which he pays or he diys it.
Buying ready made assemblies online is good sense for you but i dont see why you should not make a margin on the parts. Heck thats what garages and maytag men do all the time. This is free market. Dont do anything like procurement for free.
