Rob, I figured on special anti-gravity packs mounted on the underside. :D Actually there'd be some hinge out arms mounted to the long aprons or perhaps swing out arms inset in the top edge of the long aprons. Our dining room table which is about 180 years old has leaves which use the latter method for support.

I have one similar that is well over 200 years old and have always wanted to make a copy.
The legs are turned all the way to the bottom of the leg and the bottom stretchers are not as thick.
Should be made of either maple, cherry or pine.
 
Hi Bob,

The original I was working from had those fat stretchers. I thought it was kind of odd but that's the way they were done. I was just playing with the chestnut material I made yesterday. I think a more local wood would be appropriate, though.
