I try not to get distracted but, I've been meaning to make up another set of curved cauls. Last visit to the lumber yard I stumbled across a piece of 8/4 pecan which the yard doesn't usually carry; 8/4 that is. As Clint Eastwood says in 'Pale Rider' . . . "There's nuthin' like a nice piece of hickory".

I lay the curve out with a fairing stick and use the edge sander to make the arc. I ease the sharp edges and give them a coat of wax. I use 1/16" per foot so the ends of the 2 footers are 1/8" thinner than the middle, 3/16" for the 3 footers and 1/4" for the 4 footers.

I use them for clamping applications as shown here. I have some made from maple and was going to make more from that. The piece of pecan just happened to be at the lumberyard last trip (and it is inexpensive) and I can always use 8/4 maple for other things ;-)
