so is anyone from this board attending the show this year?
Im tempted, only because there is a 3 hour class on scroll sawing, and Id love to learn some technique and could use all the help I could get. Seems like a nice hobby to get into as I get up there in the years, no heavy lifting, and if I get any good at it, makes some beautiful projects.

Id like to meet up for dinner, lunch, hangout, whatever, so please pm me and let me know.
I will be up there with my wife again, as she has cleared her schedule
If I do come,(90% sure Ill be there as of today), my wife would love to have company during the day, Id be most likely dropping her off at Saratoga raceway for a few hours so she can play penny slots.(ya hear that sayer)
Wed be arriving Saturday mid afternoon and staying through sunday night.

I think I got the schedule of demonstrators posted correctly, hope Im allowed to do this.

these are free demos I believe, you just have to register for them.(I never paid in the past)
if someone could repost it in chart form, would be easier to understand, I cant figure it out.

Im sure Ill see Don Orr up there.

I understand the reluctance of people to want to go out of their way to meet me and maybe have dinner and chat a bit, but larry, sayer, ken, can vouch for me when I say my wife is a total sweetheart, so she balances out my personality a bit, makes it more tolerable.
so speak up, it can be a mini tourdewood gathering.

She must be a miracle worker.

Allen, I'd go WAY out of my way to meet you in person. I'm hoping it'll happen one of these days, but this one won't be doable. ;)

its early, but Ill mention me, sayer and the wifeys are meeting up for dinner Saturday night and then probably head off somewhere like maybe the casino?
Id love to have some more join us for dinner. just give a shout.

Yeah, I'll be there again. I'll be hanging out at Totally Turning most of the time. Separate event at the same location. I have volunteer duties all day Sunday. I commute about an hour to the event so I don't hang around long when things close down.

I can also vouch for Allen's wife being a sweeyheart. I have only met her a couple of times but she is a keeper for sure. Allen, you're a lucky man !

ok, last time Ill bring this up......

me, the wifey, sayer and his wifey are meeting at 6 pm Saturday night in the main lobby.
its dinner, then whatever, probably head over to the racino.

Ive exchanged emails with a few upstate NYers that wont be attending, but if anyone else wants to just meet, please pm me by tomorrow afternoon, not sure when Im leaving. (never know, we might head up tomorrow night and just drive part of the way, since my back is still not in the greatest shape)

even though theres little interest, I will post that it was good to see don orr again.
sayer and me were there with our wifeys, went to dinner, spent an hour in racino, nice time.
I took some pics at show but cant put them up here, its not my computer, hotel computer, but will post when I get home.
I spent approx 150 at the show, my wife wanted thread rippers for her and her friends, and she picked out the blanks to go with the kits.
I purchased 20 niles stoppers, along with some colored wood blanks, and a few pen blanks.'

some of the work up here, well, its incredible, lets me know where I stand on the woodworking totum pole. Id need another 40 years experience to get close to some of the work I saw this weekend.

Sure wish I was closer because I would love to attend and see you fine folks:) Glad you enjoyed it and those of you that were able to, got to get together:) Maybe some year it will work for me,

How was the show?

I have only ever gone to the annual show in Springfield, Ma - (Eastern States Exposition Center). Last show I went to was seriously - poor. Same old same old - nothing new. They didn't have or even talk CNC. Peachtree was the CENTER of the show, really sad.

I am not sure I would want to drive 10 hours or climb on an airplane to fly to a woodworking show location.

I am thinking that woodworking shows are dissolving into nothingness.

Was that show in NY - worth the trip? Heck - I can drive there. Maybe next year?

I am always looking for ingenuity and inspiration and ways to enhance creativity.

Leo, the show is totally different from the woodworking shows that travel around. Those shows are all vendors, this show has vendors but also showcases some of the most beautiful woodworking you have ever seen. This year they had a few cnc"s running to show what they can do and also a lot of seminars. It was great meeting up with Allen and Elen again, had a good dinner and fun at the casino. Also got to meet Don at the show, he was busy with his duties so maybe next time he can join us for dinner.

Indeed, that show is very different from any other woodworking show. I had the pleasure of speaking and demonstrating at the show a couple of times about 15 years ago. And Don is a sweet guy. I can also attest to the level of woodworking as I have had to judge that show twice! Not an easy task! Glad you guys had a good time.

As for the 'regular' woodworking shows. They are like any other expo type show. The purpose is to sell things. I have done a lot of those show also, but the promoters caved into the vendors and are no longer bringing in many speakers. The vendors are doing the demos themselves. Square footage costs money and seminars don't bring in enough to cover the costs. Attendees had to put up with the noise of the vendors' selling area and it certainly was not a good teaching environment. While expo centers have ancillary rooms, they are pricey and the managers are not thrilled with the idea of making sawdust. There was also the problem of clean air. No dust collectors and no way to vent fumes. Glue on the carpeting, etc. You get the idea. Times change and not always as we would have them change.

I did my last show in Tampa, FL in 2004. The cost of preparing to do a show and the time spent outstripped the compensation. In other woods, if I counted the whole time and expense, I could make more money flipping hamburgers at Mickey D's. So one did shows to promote one's own business, book, DVD, product, etc. I had begun seminary, so that didn't fit any longer. Sie la vie.

Maybe not a lot of regional participation or attendance, but rest assured there were a lot of us in other parts of the country who are interested. ;) I'd love to go to a similar show if there was one in my area.

Glad you and Sayer got a chance to meet up, and that you got to see Don. :thumb:

Well - that may be worth visiting.

I swear - I will never again go to another vendor based show - not unless I need something. My shop is pretty complete and I show online for most stuff - so vendor based shows to me are a huge waste of time - and I get aggravated at the sales guys.

What is the name of the show? Are there any links to a website. I may put it on the calendar for next year.

I know it's not really woodworking, but I may go to Florida to the Vectric convention in October this year.

I believe its called The Saratoga Woodworking Show. It's at the Saratoga Hilton, nice place,we spent the night there. I think Allen is traveling home today but he can tell you more when he gets home. It's a great place to bring the wife along, theres plenty to do other than the show while your there.
