There is a gentleman on the Scroll Saw Workshop Forum that is a master scroller/scroll saw pattern maker. He is asking how a person could make a gray stain, that would mostly be used on baltic birch plywood, for scrolled animal pictures, such as deer, raccoons etc. Would be good if it was a simple mixture he could easily mix up. Any suggestions?

I tried the steel wool and vinegar and I thought it looked pretty good for what he wants. On BB it gave a grayish color with sorta a brown tone to it. Ought be go for scroll saw animals.

It would take some experimenting, and ratio checks. Start with about 60-75% mineral spirits, and about 15% BLO. For color use an oil base black and white paint. Start with the white and gradually add in black until the mix produces the shade of gray you want. When experimenting with samples, once the stain looks close on the sample, when dry, apply the topcoat in your finishing regimen. That will change the way the sample will look. The above ratios are approximate.
