Darren, Brent or anyone else who might know. what is a good but won;t brake the bank encryption software. I need to put it on my lap top. In my business I get a lot o Personal info on my clients like Social Security, D.O.B. and their medical history and I an now being told that the Government want me to use some sort of encryption software to protect the client Personal information so what have any of you out there used?

What os are you running Don? If you've got windows 8 or 8.1 pro, you may already have BitLocker installed, if not Symantec has one, but is around $110. There are open source ones, TrueCrypt appears to be out of development now, so wouldn't recommend it, but there is one called Discryptor, which I haven't used.

If you've got a Mac, it has a built in File Vault which should work.

LOL

Don you may wish to take a look at this

http://www.encryptstick.com/

They have a press release out specifically targeting the HIPPA matter

And Bitlocker is available on windows 7 you just have to upgrade to the higher levels of windows 7 to get it. I think its Ultimate or Enterprise

See the comparison chart here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions#Comparison_chart

New ultimate will cost you around $300 but i guess there are upgrades available.

@Jay: Yup, I am. Rob may have been more helpful, but I would be very hard pressed to put $300 in a Windows laptop that old. That money goes a long way toward a newer machine. Not a Mac, but they are other machines out there.

Sorry, Don, but maybe the moths in the money bag needs some air. Sometimes you just gotta go for the gusto.

Carol, Windows 7 ain't all that old. Most businesses are still running Win7. Windows 8 has not been universally embraced. ;) And my 3 year old Windows 7 laptop still has pretty workable specs. :thumb:

My apologies to Don. Thanks, Vaughn, for reminding me that as a Mac user I am unqualified to comment on Windows products.

But I am biased. :D

You also need a PC with at least two partitions and a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). A TPM is a special chip that runs an authentication check on your hardware, software, and firmware. If the TPM detects an unauthorized change your PC will boot in a restricted mode to deter potential attackers.

You can either purchase one if your PC or laptop doesn't have one or you can do a registry hack http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/da...tlocker-encryption-on-non-tpm-windows-systems.

Not surprised, Don. But that is also a bias about insurance companies.

well Carol i can think of a lot of people who are better off becauce i helped them withh their medicare insurance. one young lady was able to afford lung transplant and a number of my clients were able to afford kimo and radation so i kinda feel defferant about the medicare insurance companies i represent.
